The “Microsoft joins Bethesda” roundtable earlier this week gave Xbox fans a chance to learn more about the company behind hit series like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Of course, there are a number of other studios under the Bethesda banner team Xbox is also looking forward to working with.
Head of Xbox, Phil Spencer, is already thinking about possible collaborations – especially in the first and third-person shooter space, name dropping studios like id Software (Doom), 343 Industries (Halo) and The Coalition (Gears of War): Here’s exactly what he had to say:
“You know, the thing about Doom and id that I think we like to talk about the history of the studio, which is amazing. But you can see it in Doom Eternal. There’s no studio that sweats every pixel onscreen and every frame the way id does. Like it’s just so clear.
“And then when you think about their capability and I think about them collaborating and working with and talking with The Coalition and 343 and just like the first-person shooter, third-person shooter space that we have, the studios that are there, it’s just kind of an amazing capability.”
If that wasn’t already exciting enough, Phil went on to note how he’s also looking forward to seeing what Microsoft and Xbox can potentially do with id Tech:
“The other thing I get really excited about with id that we haven’t really talked a lot about is the future of id Tech. And what could that mean inside of Xbox? Obviously, you know, we’ve got a ton of studios doing a bunch of different work. I loved the way Marty [Stratton] talked about how they’ve collaborated with other Bethesda studios on id Tech and I just think about that to the next level – what can we do inside of our organisation with id Tech, which is one of the world’s best game engines out there and just make it a tool that so many developers can use to realise their vision.”
On a related note, just last month, news spread about how The Coalition has seemingly been assisting 343 Industries with the development of Halo Infinite. Just imagine all of the studios that could be collaborating together moving forward.
