Sony sets new hardware record

Sony’s been surprisingly coy when it comes to console sales numbers of the PlayStation 5, but we reckon that comes down to the fact that demand has vastly outpaced supply. Regardless, a report by Digitimes – citing “industry sources” – claims that the manufacturer shipped an eye-watering 3.4 million next-gen systems during its first four weeks on the market, which is a record for the organisation. It took the PS4 a little over six weeks to sell 4.2 million units, so clearly this is a good result for the console.
Perhaps even more impressively, the firm is aiming to hit 16.8 million to 18 million units in 2021, which is a remarkable target. It aims to boost production with the help of additional capacity support from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company and various other backend service firms. Effectively, this means that it’s managed to actually increase the number of machines it’s manufacturing, which is good news for everyone still desperately searching for PS5 stock.
