Your Nintendo Switch may already have a pair of Joy-Cons, but what about for those times when you want to play multiplayer bouts of Super Smash Bros Ultimate? Or you want the comfort of a traditional controller while exploring The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild? It’s useful to have additional Switch controllers for these times. We’ve checked out the best Nintendo Switch controllers for the job, including a variety of different options for cheap Pro Controller and Joy-Con alternatives.

It may seem a bit obvious, but we’ve gone with the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller as our top pick. It really is the best Nintendo Switch controller you can buy. There’s a reason why it has a place in our list of the best Nintendo Switch accessories and best accessories for Nintendo Switch Lite.

The best Nintendo Switch controller

Considered by many to be the best controller for the Nintendo Switch, the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller looks great, feels great, and is pretty much the best out there. It’s far from inexpensive, but it’s worth the investment. It offers many of the features of Joy-Cons such as motion controls and HD rumble, but it fits into your hand more like an Xbox or PlayStation controller. That’s sure to suit avid gamers. It’s wireless too, with a decent rechargeable battery life of about 6 hours.

For those times when you want to play something in a more traditional manner than tossing around Joy-Cons, it’s far better than using the relatively flimsy feeling bundled controller. Definitely one to go for if you want something suitably weighty in your hands. It’s just right for some marathon Splatoon 2 sessions as well as diving into an immersive RPG like Breath of the Wild or Skyrim.

Cheap Nintendo Switch Pro Controller

Getting a cheap Nintendo Switch Pro Controller doesn’t mean you have to scrimp on features, as the Diswoe Wireless Controller demonstrates. If you’re an avid Xbox player and don’t feel entirely comfortable with the default Joy-Cons then this is a great replacement to your Xbox One controller. It’s wireless with a built-in battery which is excellent going at this price point. Simply pair it up via Bluetooth and you’re good to go.

It supports dual motors vibration as well as offers sensitive buttons and dual analog sticks so it all feels precise. The controller looks pretty cool too, skipping the colourful looks that many Switch controllers go for and sticking with a more traditional look.

It might not feel quite as comfy as the Pro Controller, but it’s a bargain at this price for one of the best Nintendo Switch controllers. It even throws in an old-school turbo function for when you want to set off burst fire actions without making your thumb ache.

The Beboncool Wireless Controller is only a little over £25 but it’s wireless so you won’t get tangled in cables, plus it feels a lot like using a conventional PlayStation 4 controller. It offers motion control functionality along with motor vibrations so you won’t miss out on any features here. The joysticks are symmetrical which keeps your thumbs happy and makes sure you feel good and comfy while you play. It’s lightweight and looks the part so you won’t have to worry about it looking cheap amongst your other hardware.

An impressive promised battery life of about 12 hours makes it even better for the gamer who just wants to play a little bit more Zelda. And a bit more. And a bit more…

Best Wired Nintendo Switch Controller

Sometimes, it’s just too inconvenient to have to remember to recharge your controllers all the time. That’s just one of the reasons why a wired controller is a great option. We’re rather partial to the PowerA Wired Controller, in part thanks to its fantastic colour schemes. Also, because it promises to be just the right fit thanks to being officially licensed by Nintendo. With a comfortable shape and a lightweight design, it’s ideal for younger players or those of us with smaller hands.

Ultimately, it looks and feels a lot like an Xbox controller which is frequently quite appealing. Being wired means you won’t have to worry about recharging it, plus it’s very cheap compared to even third-party wireless solutions.

Best Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons

Joy-Cons are a joy (yes, we went there) to hold and to make you feel in control of so much. The official Nintendo Joy-Cons are easily the best out there. They feel snug in your hands and not once do the buttons feel clicky or noisy when you tap them. With a wide choice of different colour schemes, they’re ideal for when you want to show off some of your personality too.

The downside? They’re far from cheap. However, you get what you pay for so they’re excellent quality and perfect to withstand a beating during an aggressive Mario Kart session. An easy inclusion, then, in our list of the best Nintendo Switch controllers.

The joy-cons rightfully take their place as one of the best Nintendo Switch controllers

Cheap Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons

In an ideal world, you’d buy official Joy-Cons for when you need some more. They’re definitely the best type of Joy-Cons but they’re not cheap. If you’re on a budget, go with the Tutuo Wireless Controller Joy-Cons and you can enjoy an experience almost the same as the official ones with only a few caveats. One of the most critical issues is that you have to charge them separately from your Nintendo Switch plus you need to sync them a little differently.

For substantially less than the official product though, they can be useful. Even more so if you live in a household where Joy-Cons are liable to go missing easily. In use, they feel almost exactly the same as the genuine article.

Options are limited but Tutuo make a solid cheap Joy-Con alternative

That concludes our look at all the best Nintendo Switch controllers. There should be something in there that improves your Switch-playing experience.

That’s not all we have for Nintendo’s console, though. You can also find our picks for the best Nintendo Switch SD card to increase your storage space, the best power bank for Nintendo Switch if you’re taking your console on the road and the best Nintendo Switch stylus for games like Super Mario Maker 2. We’ve also got a look at the best Nintendo Switch Lite case to keep your console safe.
