The latest entry in Falcom’s Legend of Heroes JRPG series has been confirmed for launch on Switch in Japan on 18th March 2021.
The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV previously had a more vague ‘Spring 2021’ date attached — which is still the case in the West — and the new concrete release date has reportedly been announced by publisher NIS America in the latest edition of Famitsu (thanks, Nintendo Everything).
Originally, the game was supposed to be part of Trails of Cold Steel III until the scope of the story forced Falcom to rethink its approach and split the game in two. Bearing that in mind, you’ll probably want to warm your steel by playing the previous game — handily available on Switch (and rather good it is, too) — before jumping in with this sequel.
The game released on PS4 a little while ago and our sister site Push Square very much enjoyed this conclusion to the saga. If you’re a fan of the previous games, or of epic JRPGs in general, you’ll no doubt want to keep this one on your radar. Here’s the English-language trailer that launched alongside the PS4 version to whet your appetite for the spring:
We spoke with Nihon Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo just prior to the release of the previous game on Switch, so check out that interview if you’re a fan of the series, and let us know if you’re excited to get your hands on TOCS4 (as no-one’s calling it) next year.
