Digital Foundry was overloaded with next-generation analysis late last year, but now that things have slowed down it’s finally returning to the Nintendo Switch. In its latest video, John Linneman takes a look at Panic Button’s port of DOOM Eternal.

So what’s it like? It’s described as a technical accomplishment and solid conversion – with everything fully intact.

“I believe Doom Eternal on Switch is a generally excellent conversion…this is definitely a phenomenal translation of what is one of the most technologically advanced engines on the market.”

“it’s clearly some of the finest work Panic Button has done yet.”

In terms of the resolution in docked mode, the game “maxes out” at 720p and dips just below 540p when taxed. In contrast, Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus went as low as 360p. While in portable, DOOM Eternal ranges between 612p and 360p.

As for frame rate – the target is 30fps, and for most parts, DOOM Eternal on Switch manages to maintain this in docked mode.

In handheld, the average performance is “somewhat comparable” to docked, but there were some noticeable frame pacing issues. Cutscenes are also capped to 20fps and are letterboxed on Switch.

If you would like to find out our own take on DOOM Eternal for Switch, be sure to check out our Nintendo Life review.
